Pediatric Speech Therapy for Hearing-Related Communication Challenges
in Newport Beach & Torrance, CA
When a child does not have full or consistent access to speech sounds, it can affect how they learn new words, understand spoken language, and develop clear speech. Even mild, fluctuating, or temporary changes in hearing may affect a child’s speech and language development.
At Stepping Stones Therapy, Inc., our pediatric speech-language pathologists work with children with identified hearing loss or hearing differences to support speech, language, and functional communication. We do not diagnose or evaluate hearing loss at our clinic. If there is a concern about your child’s hearing, we recommend discussing it with your child’s pediatrician, who can help determine whether further evaluation by an audiologist or other appropriate specialist is needed.
What Are Hearing-Related Communication Challenges?
Hearing-related communication challenges can occur when reduced or inconsistent access to sound affects the development of speech and language. Depending on the type and degree of hearing loss, a child may have difficulty hearing certain speech sounds, distinguishing between similar sounds, learning new vocabulary, following spoken directions, or participating in conversations.
Every child is different, and the impact on communication will depend on factors such as the child’s individual hearing profile, age, developmental history, communication environment, and access to appropriate hearing supports.
Signs Hearing Differences May Be Affecting Your Child's Communication
Children with hearing-related communication difficulties may:
- Mispronounce certain speech sounds or leave sounds off words
- Have difficulty distinguishing between similar-sounding words or speech sounds
- Need directions or questions repeated
- Have difficulty learning and using new vocabulary
- Use shorter or less complex sentences than expected for their age
- Have greater difficulty following conversations in noisy environments
- Experience challenges participating in conversations with peers
- Demonstrate speech, language, or early literacy skills that are developing differently than expected
These signs do not necessarily mean that a child has hearing loss. If hearing is a concern or has not recently been assessed, families should speak with their pediatrician about whether a formal hearing evaluation is appropriate.
How Speech Therapy Helps Children With Hearing Loss
Once a child’s hearing needs have been identified by the appropriate medical or audiology professionals, a speech-language pathologist can evaluate how those hearing differences are affecting speech, language, and everyday communication. At Stepping Stones Therapy, we assess your child’s communication strengths and areas of need and develop an individualized treatment plan based on those findings. Therapy may focus on:
- Developing speech sounds and improving overall intelligibility
- Building awareness and discrimination of speech sounds when appropriate
- Expanding receptive and expressive vocabulary
- Strengthening understanding and use of age-appropriate language
- Improving the ability to follow directions and understand spoken information
- Developing conversation and social communication skills
- Teaching strategies that support successful communication across different environments
- Building confidence and self-advocacy skills for everyday communication
For children who use hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other hearing technology, speech therapy can support the development and practice of communication skills while the child uses their prescribed devices. Management, programming, and assessment of hearing devices remain within the scope of the child’s audiology and medical team.
When appropriate, our speech-language pathologists can also collaborate with a child’s parents, audiologist, pediatrician, teachers, and other members of their care team to help support communication skills across environments.
