Pediatric Speech Therapy for Fluency Disorders
in Newport Beach & Torrance, CA

It’s normal for young children to have occasional disruptions in their speech as they’re learning to talk. However, frequent repetitions of sounds or syllables, stretching out sounds, blocks where words feel “stuck,” or difficulty maintaining smooth airflow while speaking may be signs of a fluency disorder. Some children may also speak at a very rapid or irregular rate, making it difficult for others to understand them.

At Stepping Stones Therapy, Inc., our pediatric speech-language pathologists help children develop strategies for easier, more comfortable, and effective communication, while building confidence in expressing what’s on their mind.

What Is a Fluency Disorder?

Decorative graphic element.

A fluency disorder changes the way your child’s speech moves from one word to the next. Instead of coming out in a steady, connected flow, their speech may be interrupted by repeated or prolonged sounds, unexpected pauses, or a pace that makes their words difficult to follow.

Stuttering and cluttering are the two main types of fluency disorders. Although they affect speech in different ways, both can make it harder for your child to join conversations, share their ideas, or feel comfortable speaking in everyday situations.

Signs Your Child May Have a Fluency Disorder

Your child may benefit from a speech therapy evaluation if they frequently:

  • Repeat sounds or syllables within words, such as “b-b-b-ball” or “ba-ba-ba-ball”
  • Stretch or prolong sounds, such as “ssssssun” or “mmmmom”
  • Experience blocks or moments when no sound comes out, even though they are trying to speak
  • Show physical tension or effort while talking, such as tightening their face, blinking, or pushing to get a word out
  • Have difficulty maintaining smooth, continuous airflow during speech
  • Speak at a very fast or irregular rate, causing words or syllables to run together or making their message difficult to follow
  • Use extra words or sounds, restart sentences, or change what they wanted to say to avoid getting stuck
  • Show frustration, embarrassment, or reluctance to speak because of difficulty getting their words out

How Speech Therapy Helps with Fluency Disorders

At Stepping Stones Therapy, we begin with a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s speech patterns, including the types and frequency of disruptions, physical tension or effort, and how their fluency impacts everyday communication. Treatment is individualized based on your child’s age, severity of stuttering, how long they have been stuttering, and their individual communication needs.

Fluency therapy is not simply about teaching a child to “stop stuttering.” While therapists may introduce strategies that support easier or smoother speech, these strategies are presented as communication tools rather than something a child must use every time they speak. An important part of therapy, particularly in the early stages, is helping children recognize and understand moments of stuttering or other speech disruptions in a supportive, age-appropriate way.

Current approaches to stuttering therapy also emphasize developing healthy attitudes toward communication and stuttering rather than focusing only on eliminating disfluencies. Therapy may help children become more comfortable with how they speak, reduce negative reactions to stuttering, and build confidence communicating even when stuttering occurs. Caregiver education is also an important part of treatment, as parents can help create a supportive communication environment and reinforce positive, accepting messages about their child’s speech.

Depending on your child’s needs, therapy may include stuttering awareness, desensitization, strategies for reducing physical tension, fluency-enhancing techniques, self-advocacy, and practice communicating confidently in different situations. For children who demonstrate rapid or irregular speech, treatment may also address rate, pausing, and organization of speech.

Your child’s therapist may recommend our social skills groups for additional opportunities to practice communication with peers. Families also receive practical education and strategies to support comfortable, confident communication at home.
